SkySight

SkySight is an interactive forecasting tool. It combines the latest forecast modelling technologies with an intuitive user interface, to provide high resolution forecasts and powerful flight planning tools. Access is provided to all available regions and forecasting tools with a single subscription. A 12 month subscription costs 79 US dollar which currently equals about 70 euro.

The software is browser based, therefore you will always be using the latest version. Please ensure that your browser is up to date to ensure the best compatibility. For LXNAV and SeeYou SkySight users, updates are integrated within the regular device firmware and software updates

SkySight will work with all modern browsers, on all platforms. Chrome is recommended for the best compatibility. The website is designed to work on all screen sizes, although some advanced features require larger screen sizes. For mobile devices, SkySight is accessed via the browser and dedicated mobile website.

 

SeeYou PC can connect with SkySight to provide forecast overlays on the native maps. This feature is available from SeeYou PC V8.0 onwards and can be used for task planning and post flight analysis.

SkySight forecast overlays are available to LXNAV users who use the LX80xx and LX90xx series flight computers. The WiFi module must be installed and software updated to the latest version.

 

SkySight can also be displayed on Oudies with the latest software version. Simply connect the Oudie to a PC with the program SeeYou and run Naviter Updater to upload the weather maps to your Oudie.

Weather data can be displayed for a certain location or for an entire regions (South Africa, Europe, Italy, US West, Canada, Mid US, US East, Eastern Canada, Spain, Morocco, Argentina, New Zealand, Brazil, Japan, Andes, West Australia, East Australia).
 
 
  • Waypoints, tasks and IGC-files can be loaded for easy flightplanning and detailed flight evaluations.
  • Airspace charts and satellite maps can be overlayed to optimize situational awareness.
   

Overiew of forecast maps available in SkySight:

Potential Flight Distance Distance an 18m- or Club-class glider might be expected to fly, taking off at first thermals and landing at last, assuming MacCready theory in high conditions and slower in weak
Cross-country Speed XC Speed an 18m-class glider might be expected to fly, in an hour, according to MacCready 
Thermal Strength & B/S Ratio  Strength of thermals, with an indication for how broken the thermals will be (Buoyancy Shear ratio)
Height of Thermals  Height at which thermals fall below 0.9 m/s 
Depth of Thermals   Height above ground at which thermals fall below 0.9 m/s 
Surface Heating  Heat transferred into the atmosphere due to solar heating of the ground, creating thermals 
Cu Depth  Difference between the top of predicted thermals and the condensation layer, increasingly positive values indicating more likely cumulus, negative values indicating unlikely cumulus 
Cu Cloudbase  In areas where cumulus is expected to form, the height of that cumulus above sea level 
Overdevelopment  Shows areas likely to overdevelop, as a percentage of 600 m depth of overdevelopment 
CAPE / Storms  Convective Available Potential Energy. Higher values indicate greater potential instability, larger updraft velocities within deep convective clouds, and greater potential for thunderstorm development 
Rain  Rain accumulated over the last half hour 
Low level cloud cover  Low cloud cover percentage, of any type, eg. Cu, Sc, St (1013 hPa - 642 hPa, 0 - 4000 m, 0 - FL 130) 
Mid level cloud cover  Mid level cover cloud percentage, eg. Ac, As, Cb (642 hPa - 350 hPa, 4000 - 10000 m, FL 130 - FL 330)
High level cloud cover  High cloud cover percentage, eg. Ci, Cs (350 hPa - 150 hPa, 10000 m - 20000 m, FL 330 - FL 650) 
Forecast Satellite View  Cloud cover forecast intended to mimic a real satellite photo 
Surface Temperature  The temperature at a height of 2 m above ground level 
Surface Dewpoint  The dew point temperature at a height of 2m above ground level 
Synoptic Map  Analysis chart from the UK MetOffice 
Ridge Lift  Areas of predicted ridge lift...duh
MSL Pressure  Atmospheric Pressure at Mean Sea Level in mBar 
Surface Wind  The speed and direction of the wind at 2 m above the ground 
Boundary Layer Wind Average  The speed and direction of the vector-averaged wind in the Boundary Layer 
Boundary Layer Top Wind  The speed and direction of the wind at the top of the Boundary Layer 
Wind Shear  Difference in wind between the top and bottom of the Boundary Layer 
Wave Cross-section  Customizable cross-section of wave activity 
Convergence  Maximum up/down motion within the Boundary Layer, as created by horizontal wind movement 
Vertical Velocity  Vertical velocity at 600/1500/3000/4000/5000 m (950/850/700/600/500 mBar), plus wind speed/direction barbs Used for wave/convergence
3D Wave  Three dimensional display of wave activity 
Significant Weather  Significant weather overlaid on height of thermals
